  • Light Hammer Fall?

I was at the range the other day. I was working on a cast bullet load for my Meffert drilling. It is a Dural framed gun with 1931 proof marks. When I went to fire the first round, I set the trigger, then when I pulled the trigger, click. I openned the action, there was a light dent in the primer. I repeated with another cartridge. Same thing happened
I put it aside with the action open. Sometime later, I picked it up and it worked fine. I did not set the trigger this time. I have noticed that occaissionally I've experienced a light hammer fall like this when i moved the rifle barrel selector on and off a number of times. I suspect I need to send it to JJ for something. Any thoughts on what night be going on? Might this be operator error?
    Thanks

    Blackfly,
Are you sure the hammer is actually falling? When the trigger is set and touched off, it will also "click", even if the safety is on. Sometimes the set trigger doesn't trip the hammer, if the spring in the trigger isn't strong enough. Sometimes, the hammer might not stay back and when the gun is closed, it goes forward again ( and may mark the primer). When this happens, the set trigger will "click". If only the rifle barrel is loaded and the selector is set on the shot barrel, the hammer will fall, but hit the shotshell firing pin. If the selector is set correctly, but the safety is on. the set trigger will "click". The safety has a rod with a "flat" filed on it, to "clear" the hammer, and if it is not pushed all the way forward, the hammer might catch the corner of the "flat", slowing it down enough that it doesn't fire. I suggest you experiment with your gun to see if the problem is one of the above items, before sending it off to someone else. Also, if you have never taken it apart; from 1931 until now is a long time to accumulate "crud and debris", which can also be the problem. By the way, I also have a Dural framed Meffert drilling, and it's great.
