  • German .22 Hornet

Ironically, just as the new Waidmannsheil! arrived with an article about Zi-Di .22 Hornets, this Simson H V Karabiner was acquired. I only have the auction photos to present, until the gun arrives. It is of interest to me (by no means a skilled or knowledgeable reloader) that there is apparently a good deal of difference in .22 Hornet cartridges. The 5,6 X 35R and 5,6 X 35 RWS (true American Hornet) evidently differ in case rim size AND shoulder. Vierling is apparently .o46 larger diameter. Has anyone had experience with this?

    Steve,
The 5.6x35R Vierling is different than the American Hornet which has a thicker rim. There is an unlearned article in Waidmannsheil #56, explaining the relationship between the 22 WCF,5.6x35R Vierling, and 22 Hornet. There is mention in this article of a special HV loading of the Vierling cartridge, which was IDed by a different color primer, and for which your rifle seems to be marked. It should be noted that even though the Hornet was most commonly just called the "Hornet", the metric designation was 5.6x36R, the thicker rim having made the case slightly longer than the Vierling. With some effort, 5.6x35R Vierling cases can be made from 22 Hornet. You should note the possibility of differing groove diameters when buying bullets for handloading, as also explained in the article.

Thanks, Mike. That is what I had noted, I thought. Will look for that article.

        Steve,

Attached are drawings of the 5.6 x 35R Vierling and 22 Hornet that I have. The bullet diameters a shown as different and I might suggest slugging the barrel to be sure. Let us see more pictures when you get it.

Here some datas from DWM 1934:

1-4 is the Vierling, 5 is the ".22 Hornet".
Interesting is 3 with an pressure around 2750 kg/cm², the normal Vierling is about 1500-1600 kg/cm².
Loads like 3 came with the warning "For weapons with strong actions only".

                            chapmen,
The same thing has been happening to me for a good while. Every time I post something, I have to go back and delete the duplicate. It seems to be happening to others also.

                              Chapmen,

I have the Vierling Pmax (CIP) at 39,160 psi and I think that matches up with your info on the cartridge. The Hornet is at 43,511 psi Max. I can see getting 2670 FPS pretty easy with less than that max pressure and a Hornady 45 grain Hornet bullet.

Hope this doesn't double post. Thanks, Diz
