J P Sauer 9x57

I've finally taken some photos of my old J P Sauer 9x57. My curiosity was piqued as to when it might have been made, so I pulled the barreled action from the stock for a look. Its probably obvious to some of you that this wouldn't have been necessary, but it allowed me to look for other markings that were on the barrel and action below the wood. There is no date code.

Before someone complains, I bought the rifle at an auction about 20 years ago not knowing what it was. There were about 300 items on the bill at the auction house that evening and I just made some notes of items of interest. This one had a string tag marked "8mm?". It had a brown Pachmayr recoil pad, low scope safety, Weaver bases, and modified or changed bolt handle. The price was such that I bought it without complaint....I later discovered it to be chambered 9x57, bore worn, and cracked between the magazine box and rear guard screw. While having that repaired, I had the pad changed. Modifications such as these were common, and just part of the working life story of this rifle. I've hunted with the ol' girl, and taken WT, but it only sees fair weather these days.

The rifle was proofed in Suhl before 1912 as the gauge number 118.35 shows. The "Wild man" was a Sauer & Sohn trademark. The CROWN - crown/N proofmarks indicate proof using the special 4000 atm proof powder. As the Mauser patents were still valid before WW1 Sauer & Sohn bought in a commercial action from the Mauser, Oberndorf factory. The Mauser commercial serial number 15625 dates the action to 1907, but the rifle may have been completed a year later.

Thank you again! I'm detecting a pattern in my taste for German sporting guns. I have a 3rd that also has no date code, but proofed for nitro. I'll start another thread on the CFT O/U.

Just a question regarding the barrel legend: is it the normal German or English variation, that means, does it read

"J. P. Sauer & Sohn, Suhl" (German variation)

or

"J. P. Sauer & Son, Suhl, Germany" (English variation)

The English variation may vary (Prussia instead of Germany) - the key would be the English writing of "Son".

I'm asking, because I have two other Sauer Mausers in the database in the 141xxx SN range in 9x57 having the English barrel legand variation.

It is marked on the rib: Mod.Mauser.J.P.Sauer & Son.

There is no city or country designation. Its a wonderful old rifle that, unfortunately, had been "modernized" prior to my purchasing it.

Except for the scope and bases it's a twin to my J. P. Sauer & Sohn. Neat old rifles.

How long is the barrel on yours? Mine appears to be about 20-1/2".

Hmmm....I did not know that. It is empty now, thank you!!!

It's in the safe, in the vault but I'm opening everything tomorrow so I'll measure it, (short, bad night, not much sleep, funeral today and I'm too tired to fool with it right now). Just from memory I believe mine is close to that. It's definitely a lot shorter than my Peterlongo which I believe is 25 in.
