The 8.1x72 is not the same as 9.3x72R, this would be instead 8x72R. You didn't say which rifle this marking was found on. I would guess it is an Austrian rifle, since they usually marked them with groove diameter, while the Germans usually used bore diameter. This caliber ,if German rifle,would show as 7.8 or 7.9x72. German 9.3x72R rifles would be marked 8.6,8.7,8.8, or 8.9x72, depending on bore diameter(assuming post 1911 proof). If you own the rifle, you should make a chamber cast and "slug" the barrel. You can handload for this rifle, in the same manner as any other rifle. If you don't own it but are thinking about buying it, don't let the caliber stop you.
