    Martin,
Diz makes a good point, the punch I made was shaped, specifically , to avoid the flash hole. I hardened the punch, when I was swaging the rims onto the 7mm mag cases( this required much more pressure), but I'm not at all sure it would be required to just move 45-70 rims forward. Just to make things a little easier, I turned a shallow groove into the solid part of the head, just ahead of the rim(the width of a cutoff tool or narrower) and made sure the diameter of the inside depression was a few thousandths larger than the case head. These things may be self evident, so don't feel insulted that I mentioned them, the intention was to be helpful.

Magazine on its way - so all will become apparent !

Diz - was thinking the exact same thing - but not sure my OCD will allow me to have only 99 cases !!!! may have to take a cast !

Mike - no, all good advises - did you have to make a relief cut on the 45-70 cases?

        Martin,
I did make the cut, but my friend Steve didn't, and he had no problems.

          Hi All

Got myself a sight at last - a bit rough but it is restoring well.

What I do not understand is what the slit above the sighting hole is for, and why it does seem to have been deliberately closed with a hammer at the top of it?

          thanks

          Martin

The diopter sight could be used in two different ways, the slit is used for shooting narrow rectangular target at 300 meters essentially. In that case you'd remove the eyepiece and obturate the hole to avoid interference.

                        long.j.silver,
Great work. This is not the right forum for it, but the little snippets of photos in your shop show you have great equipment to work with. Is that a Hardinge lathe ? I doubt you need any machining advice from an amateur like me.

The stock work looks great, especially how the grain of the new piece fits the original wood. Thanks for sharing.
