The Scheutzen rifle I ordered arrived today. All evidence points to it being a C.G. Haenel as it is so stamped on the barrel and the receiver is stamped "Original Haenel-Aydt". Proofed in September of 1926. I didn't expect it to be quite as heavy as it is, 11.5 lb. The sight is near perfect as is the bore. Trigger is literally set to a "hair". I cast the chamber and it is definitely an 8.15 X 46R. However.....I expected a groove diameter of somewhere between .315 and .320 but it mics .345. The neck of the cast mics .380.
As is my normal practice I cast the chamber a couple inches long to pick up the bore/groove dia. and when I measured the groove I was a bit surprised. So, I slugged the bore also. Same thing, .345. It's no big thing except that I don't have a 34 cal. mold. Accurate Molds makes a 170 gr. mold at .340 and I'm certain Tom will open it up to .347-.348 so I'm not helpless. I do need to check the twist before I order a mold.
Have any of you guys who fool with the Scheutzen rifles ran into a groove dia. that big for an 8.15?
Edit: The twist is 1 - 20 1/4. That seemed slow to me so I checked it twice and it is. That's gonna take a shorter bullet than 170 gr. I believe, no?
