Hello all, Hope your holidays where cheerful and the new year finds you happy and healthy. I've taken a few more pictures of the underside of the barrel with the HS and serial number. Can not find any proof marks. Still trying to determine who A. S. or S. A. might be. Any ideas? Sry can't upload more pics for some reason. Since your nice BF doesn't have any proof marks, I opine that it was made prior to the 1891 Proof law,or at least between then and the early 1893 effective date of the law. If you can find a Crown V mark, this would mean it was in stock somewhere on the effective date. For a rifle of this obvious quality, I wouldn't be surprised to find out it was never in "stock" anywhere, rather "made to order"(speculation).

I think you are right Mike, I just wish there was a record of sales during that time frame which could track this to it's original owner. The stock carvings and the initials A.S. or S.A. you would think could help if there are no sn records available. Trying to post some more pictures. Always have a difficult time with this. Might be because I have a apple MAC. Just guessing.

Hello, ellenbr, I am attempting to post a few more pictures of the underside of barrels with the HS markings. Hopefully, i'm able.

In march 2011 I visited the Waffen Museum in Suhl with fellow American Engraver Scott Pilkington and German engraver Hendrik Frühauf. We were also accompanied by Scott's friend Frau Nettie von Weech.

If you travel to Germany, the Waffen Museum is well worth the visit even if you have to go out of your way to get there. Suhl is due North of Nürnberg where the annual IWA hunting show is held.

I have attached a few pics from the museum to give you an idea of what they have there.

Which museum is in Zella Mehlis? I have been to the museums in Suhl, Coburg, Koblenz, and Sömmerda.

Ah yes, now I remember. The museum pass was for both museums, but I was on a tight schedule and had to move on. Will visit again. Thanks.

In the last issue of "Der Waffenschmied" there was a nice walking tour map of the gun maker's in Suhl. Has anyone checked it out?

I am heading to Germany in a few weeks for the Kassel Show, and am planning on visiting Suhl again for a day trip. Will visit the Waffenmuseum again, and also want to visit the Zella-Mehlis Stadtmuseum as well. So, I thought I might try the walking tour.
