  • Deer Hunt

This year, for the first time, I used my Franz Merkel drilling (16 x 16 x 7X57R) for the Wisconsin deer hunt. Erik Mietzner had once again crafted a set of scope rings for me, and I mounted a 1.5 x 4 Luepold scope. One shot at about 100 yards, and I had this nice whitetail doe. A memorable hunt with this beautiful gun.

      norsk,
I second sharps4590's motion. Looks like a good shot too.

The gun is very accurate with S & B factory ammo. First shot is right on the crosshairs, and subsequent shots (without letting the barrel cool) are grouped 3" -4" higher. The bullet actually went right through the heart. I had 65mm Brenneke slugs in the shotgun barrels, but my shooting experience with them in this gun is that they print high and left, so would only use them on close shots, under 40 yards.

          Waidmannsheil!, Norsk, very well done.
BTW, "about 30 meters", slightly less than 40 yards, is the accepted range limit here in Germany for the use of Brenneke slugs from the avarage, not especially regulated, drilling or combination gun.

That is a very nice doe, Norsk. The older guns are still doing what they were designed to do if someone like yourself shows them some love and takes them afield. Thank you for posting.
