It's gun number 2586 proofed at the Ferlach proofhouse in 1976.

I knew I could count on you Axel! Many thanks.

BTW, I'm finally having the "Fred Adolph" drilling chamber cast. Bets are that it's the 6.5x54 MS, but I'll wait for the pro's answer.

Thanks again for all the info you've provided on my drillings (now I'm up to 5 of them).

Axel, question: If the mark is "2586.977", where were the last three digits mean "Sept of 1977", not 1976? Thanks.

Yes, September of 1977. I'd have to dig a bit, but some time after WWI the proofhouse moved to a 3 digit datecode, month & year then in the decade following this example they moved on to a 3 letter datecode much akin to the Germans date letter system. For now not sure what the code might have been.

          Cheers,

Me thinks the above to be associated to that of Steyr & the 1980s datacode.

The above is Steyr's datecode enigma. I assume Ferlach's was similar?

Raimey and Axel, I assume the discussion of "letter datecode" has nothing to do with my 1977 Franz Sodia? As far as I can tell it's got no equivalent of a three letter proofmark anywhere. But it sure is interesting. Thanks.

Not really but all I could find @ my fingertips. Ferlach commenced in the last segment of the last decade of the 19th Century with a datastring that ended with a date. Then sometime post WWII they used a 3 digit month & year @ the end. Then in the 1980s they moved forward to the above letter datecode. I'll try to ferret out the 3 digit date code @ some point.

By the way this site has been hacked & must be some Chinese thruput?

                  Cheers,
