  • Unknown Gun

    Hello,

I am a new member that is having trouble identifying a gun I recently purchased. I thought I was fairly knowledgeable about guns but my efforts to figure out what I have have been so far in vain! I know that the shotgun is a 16 gauge and that is where most of my knowledge ends outside of being able to identify some basic proof marks. Any thoughts on what this gun is?

    Thank you for your help!

A (then) cheap hammer shotgun with a Lefaucheux breech action. The two proofdates, August 1928 and March 1931, are a bit puzzling. Such shotguns were still offered about 1930 in the Burgsmueller catalog. Some prices for comparison: such shotguns Mk. 50.50 to 59.50, Mauser sporting rifle on an ex-military WW1 98 Action with set trigger Mk.91.- to 174.-, Walther PP pistol Mk. 54.-, Remo break open stalking rifle from Mk. 115.- up, hammer drillings from Mk. 188.- to 384.-, hammerless Mk. 238.- to 520.-. Before WW1 such shotguns were usually imported from Belgium. Due to post-WW1 economic restrictions they were made by the Suhl and Zella-Mehlis guntrade. Your gun is proofed for 16 gauge 2 1/2" shells. Both barrels have some degree of choke, crown/W mark. That "grip adapter" was added by a previous owner.
