  • Help with Mauser ID

Gross got. And Waidmanns heil I have what I believe to be a Mauser model M he rifle has been rebar relied in .358 Norma mag. The barrel is 20" long and the stock has been replaced. It has double set triggers and a spoon bolt handle. The receiver is engraved and has claw scope mounts. The mounts cover the front of the receiver. I have what I believe to be serial numbers on the bolt and flor plate of 3099 and BU proof marks. I have not taken it out of the stock as it is bedded but I can if need be. I will try to post photos. Thanks for any information. Steve

          Steve,

Welcome to the forum. I believe you will learn a great deal here.

I am nowhere as knowledgable as most of the membership here, but I would strongly recommend you remove the action from the stock and take detailed photographs of the markings.

From what you have presented I would be inclined to believe it is a KAR 98 that was sporterized, likely after WWII. Pulling the action from the stock will allow the membership here to determine otherwise.

Is the barrel marked 358 Norma Mag? If not, how did You arrive at that chambering?

              Steve,
I agree with Nathaniel that the rifle should be removed from the stock and all markings photographed. Be sure to check the back of the magazine box for serial number. This might, after all, be a commercial action. The markings on the bolt and the lack of locking screws support this. The profile of the barrel and the "Magnaport" ports in the barrel, lead me to guess this may have been a 9x57, with .358" groove dia.(common)that may have been rechambered to something else.If it is ,indeed, 358 Norma ,i would be pretty fierce and would need the ports. Since it is a small ring, if it is a commercial action, it would have to be a transitional action and the number is pretty high for that. It could be a replacement bolt also.

Ok guys here’s the story a friend of mine who was German built this rifle in the last few years of this life to hunt grizzly bears. He told me on one trip home he went to the Mauser factory and they looked up the rifle and it had been built per war I don’t remember what year or what model it was but it was supposed to be a civilian model. He had it built in .358 Norma for a grizzly trip he never took. I have found the same number 3099 on multiple parts. The barrel has no makings on it so I believe it is a replacement. I did take it out of the stock today and I can say the stock is a replacement. I used my camera for the photos today and they are much better.
