Those thumbnails are fiends as typical & I for one cannot get them to expand. I expect an issue with the sight but the possibility exists for user error on my end.

        Cheers,

Can you post photo of action serial number and of bottom of the barrel. If the actiom goes with the bolt and mag.assy. and is also numbered 3099, it would be dated 1901( if my calculations are correct).

Might have been a cookie issue as I've switched to another computer & can view them.

                Cheers,

The recoil lug on the bottom of the receiver is of the very early type shaped like an '03 Springfield, not the later rectangular type. Would be interesting to see the gas ports in the bolt body and also the firing pin assembly. Dan

I'm afraid I don't have a very good answer for you on this one. The bolt body has the larger 5 x 10 m/m gas ports adopted in 1902 in conjunction with the revised "safety" firing pin. The receiver, as I noted before, is of the very early type with a contoured recoil lug. This feature is seen through about 1897 in early Mauser actions, with those following typically having the rectangular lug.

All that said, however, Mauser, like most commercial firms, was good about making use of what they found in their parts bins, and I wouldn't be surprised if they pieced out actions in this early period for sales to gunmakers like Rigby in London and Sauer in Suhl. The replacement of the original barrel and stock, and the 'scope bases likely covering receiver markings deprive us of some good sources of additional clues. It was interesting to have a look; wish I could have been more helpful. Dan

Its an old 98 a receiver. The small ring receiver with the small thread not 26mm the 24 mm Mauser barrel thread. In this time the .358 Norma not at the constructionboard.
Mein Englisch ist nicht so gut aber ich bin bemüht. Sorry

OK, here is my 2 cents worth, after seeing the action out of the stock. I believe it is an early( transitional) 96/98 action, that has been rebarreled or rechambered and restocked, relatively recently( if it is indeed .358 Norma). I had calculated the date as 1901, but if the bolt dates it to 1902, I won't dispute the date( the bolt is numbered to the Mag. box and floor plate. The action shows no serial number, but I believe the number is covered up by the "sattel"(?) for the front mount base. I think the clawmounts are about the same age as the stock and chambering.
In my considered opinion, I think you would be more satisfied if you loaded your own ammo to something less than full power, in this rifle.
                            Spguns,
Certainly your English is better than my German.
