I have a Schuetzen rifle with the following marks on top of receiver-D.R.G.M. SYST:BUCHEL, & on top of barrel Ge?r. Stengel Oelsnitz. Can't make out the 3rd letter on the barrel, but probably the gunsmith that made the gun?

Proof marks on bottom of barrel are G,B,& U, all with crown over them. Serial # 652 is on barrel, receiver, & butt plate. I don't know caliber, just got the gun. Will do a chamber casting soon. Thanks for any help & any info that can be given, Jim.

Probaby Gebrüder Stengel of Oelsnitz but I don't recognize the name Stengel right off. More than likely in 8,15X46 1/2 R. Should be a bore diameter stamp underneath. Probably made in Zella - Mehlis or Suhl.

    Cheers,

      jammed,
It will take the chambercast to be sure, but, I believe it would be 8.15x46R. This caliber was almost the universal target cartridge. The barrels in this caliber are found with widely varying diameters, so be sure to capture a good section of the barrel on the chambercast and/or slug the bore.

Most likely made by E.F. Büchel, Hauptstrasse 4, Zella - Mehlis, and retailed by the Stengel Brothers, who ran a hardware- and gunshop in Oelsnitz. Unfortunately, I don't know which Oelsnitz: There are two towns with this Name in Saxony, Oelsnitz im Voigtland and Oelsnitz im Erzgebirge.

          Hello

I finally found the right thread. I just deleted the following post from another thread started by the same OP. Sorry.

I performed a bit of archaeology and found this. Gebr?der Stengel, Oelsnitz im Vogtland: Inhaber, Hermann, Rudolf and Paul Stengel. Hermann was Schlossermeister; Paul was B?chsenmachermeister; on Rudolf there is no occupation to be found (1904). Address for the business was Postplatz 6 so maybe the business moved at some time.

Here is an ad from 1899 (click the image)

EDIT: the forum does not accept apostrophes nor Umlauts, or so it seems. It does not accept this French C either, whatever it's called. Something with zilla i believe. I know it's not Godzilla, though.

Another EDIT: now it did accept an apostrophe!

          Kind regards
          Peter
