  • Carl Gebert shuetzen rifle markings

Hello, I have shot a few more pictures of the various proof marks and numbers on my rifle, I hope someone can help me understand them. The longest number is on the ramrod and does not match anything on the rifle, though the ramrod looks original, it's threaded to fit into the rifle. I assume the caliber to be 9.5X47R though the bore is slightly bigger, more like 9.8 mils , and the chamber may be a tad shorter, more like 4.6 brass. It's a bit empirical but the rifle is very accurate and pleasant to shoot. Can anybody make sense of the markings?
    Thanks,
    Patrick

    PatBig,
I will leave it to others who are more knowledgeable than I, to ID the markings that are on the rifle. The lack of normal German proof marks on a rifle marketed in Munich, indicates it was made before the proof law came into effect in early 1893. As to the cartridge it is intended for, there were a great many similar cartridges used during the period the rifle would have made. Many of these were based on the "Mauser Base"(MB) case, of many different lengths and shapes, including both 47 and 46 mm, and different calibers. Then, as now, devotees of target shooting had their own ideas of the cartridge that would give them the best score. This gave rise to a great many similar cartridges, the ID of which cannot be determined from markings on the rifle. If the ID can be determined, it would require making a chamber cast and "slugging" the bore (or extending the chambercast into a good section of the barrel). Even then, the nominal caliber determined may not be correct. Since you say the rifle is is very accurate and pleasant to shoot, you obviously have cases and bullets, therefore, I suggest you just call it whatever nominal caliber you think fits best.
