    buckstix,
That is a great group, and a good useable load.( Did you use 1/2" backer rod for the foam filler, or something else?)

      Hello mike ford,
      Thanks for the reply.

Yes, I used 1/2" dia foam backing rod. I use backing rod for all my "unfilled" loads. I buy it in 100 foot spools from Amazon. 1/4", 3/8", 1/2", 3/4", and 1" dia. It has always worked great.

        Great,
Even though I'm still using Kapok , I think backer rod is the best overall material for any one not already using something else. You just buy the diameter you need( see buckstix's remarks above), cut pieces to the length you need and stuff them in, before seating the bullet. In addition to Amazon, it is available at building supply houses. The use of fillers at all, in large cases is a highly personal thing and the subject of a lot of "discussion"/ disagreement. One of the major factions in this argument says if you use a filler, it must fill all the empty space in the cases. Backer rod satisfies this faction and is not objectionable to others. Everybody agrees that if a filler is used, it must be worked up including the filler. Do not add a filler to an existing load!!!

          Hello all,

Well, I got around to testing the 16ga barrel with 1oz lead balls today. I found that a "stiff" 3-dram load worked best. Lower velocities didn't do very well. The black powder load really "smoked". Here are today's results. This should be good for hunting whitetail deer this fall. Next time at the range I'll test the pattern with #6 shot.

          **** UPDATE ****

I made it out to the range to pattern the 16ga shotgun barrel. I loaded a 3-dram load of 1oz of 7-1/2 = 338 pellets. The shotgun choke of this barrel measured .005", which is a SKEET choke. A skeet choke is recommended for close dove and woodcock hunting. Target is shown. With this result using shot, and the result using ball, and using the rifle, I'd be happy to take this gun into the field and test it on any size game, from dove, to deer, to boar or bear.
