  • Looking for any info you could give me

I am trying to find out anything and everything I can about this gun I just inherited from my granddad. From searching Google I have only really found that it is a cape gun. It has lots of marks but I have not found a good source of what the marks represent. Then I came across this forum. Also, if anyone might know a value for it I would appreciate that as well. My husband loves it and has no interest in selling it but would like to know in case it is something we would need to put on our insurance.

Thanks in advance for all your help.

Is it a hammer or hammerless cape gun? It was retailed by Bartels but made the talented pool of mechanics in Zella-Mehlis in early 1933 possibly with some effort by L.K. Difficult to see but is the diameter 8/9mm on the right flat?

    Kind Regards,

What Raimey said is correct, the diameter ,written as 8/9, would be written as 8.9 in our system and means that the bore diameter(not groove or bullet dia) is 8.9 mm. In a gun like this, at this time, this bore diameter likely corresponds to the 9.3x74R cartridge. If a chambercast, or trial with a cartridge/case, confirms this; you are lucky. This cartridge is avaliable now and is even loaded in the US (Hornady), and is a very good cartridge. The shotgun barrel is chambered for shorter than normal 16ga shells, 2 1/2" shells are avaliable, but some people would have the chamber lengthened an some would not. This is up to the owner. I don't usually give estimated values, because I would like to have it and estimating the value would be a conflict of interest. However, since you are not interested in selling it( I applaud this- leave it to a son/daughter), I will say I would insure it for $1200-$1800; depending on the engraving, which I cannot see. I hope you find this useful. Now I see the engraving and that it is a hammer gun, I would say $1200 to $1400.

Thank you so much for the information. My husband we excited to learn that he could get ammo for it but I doubt he will ever try to shoot it, he like it just hanging on the mantle.
And thanks for giving me the value. I am glad I asked because I would have never thought that it would be that much and I would have not put that on my insurance. I will be adding it now.

          Thanks again
