  • Help on ID, Drilling 12x2 side by side nitro, 8.8 mm rifle

Looking for help on my Grandfather's Shotgun

Just picked this up from my fathers house, live in AZ, thank goodness dry heat.

Overall the bluing is great... its is dirty, but barrels are perfect on inside.

Side by Side, 12 gauge marked Nitro, and 8.8 mm rifle bore, going to have a casting made to find chamber. KRUPP-ESSEN, FLUSSSTAHL... Fluid Steel by Krupp, great steal

Left Barrel: crown over S on barrel, beneath fore grip: crown over W, crown over U, 12 in a circle, followed by a 13

Right Barrel: Under fore grip, crown over W, crown over U, 12 in a circle, followed by a 13

Shotgun Barrels: under the fore grip are marked, 12 in a circle, followed by a 13... Is it a 1913 proof?

Rifle Barrel: WITTEN, S S in crazy cursive, Crown over G, Crown over U, Initials R S., 8.8 mm, will have a casting made of the chamber to determine caliber/length

Any Info is much appreciated. There is no serial number to be found, the hammers are exposed, and looks to be designed as open sights. What is something like this worth?

12 gauge side by side, 8.8 mm, in great condition? Is R S. Robert Schlegelmilch?

No, it's a post 1912 and pre-1923 Suhl drilling. R.S. well could be for Robert Schlegelmilch and SS just might be for Sylvestr Schilling, both were excellent craftsmen in their own right. Is it an underlever(Roux) opener? Image of the frame might yield some insight.

    Kind Regards,

      Thank You Raimey

Here are some additional photos, I am using a phone camera. Will take better photos on my DSLR tomorrow, not enough time to really set up and stage today

Thank you for the info. On Tuesday I am going to have the rifle barrel cast to see length. Planning on shooting this once a gunsmith okays it, is that a bad idea?

        Lukester,
The crown over S means the barrel was proofed for shot, crown over W means the barrel is choked(usually pretty tight), the crown over U is the mark for a view proof (really a detailed inspection). The 12 in a circle means it is chambered for 12 ga,65mm( if it was for 2 3/4",it would have a 70 next to it). The 13 is the diameter of the bore ahead of the chamber, expressed in ga.measurement (about 18.03 mm)and is not the date. The 8.8 is a bore dia.most commonally found on 9.3x72R drillings, but can also be found on others.Whitten is the type steel the barrel is made from. I hope this helps.
