  • help identifiying my drilling

Inherited this drilling from our grandfather decades ago.
My brother and I finally decided to check out any history.
If anyone can help we would appreciate it.

    Hello

The following is what I was able to work out. At some time it went through a re-proof (crown R's); bore is 8,7 mm which together with 72 speaks for a/some 9,3x72R cartridge; shot tubes are 16 gauge and length of chambers are not shorter than 65 mm (circled 16); left shot tube is choked to some extent(crown W); 16 and 16/1 are the actual diameter of the tubes (inside); rifle barrel may have a marking SS. I can't make out the date code marking nor the ledger and consequently I can't tell whether it was proofed before or after Zella and Mehlis merged into Zella Mehlis. It may, however, have a Zella-Mehlis proof house marking. Bullet weight for the rifle cartridge is 12,7 gram (again it speaks for 9,3x72R) and K.m.G is for Kupfermantel-Geschoss and crown N next to that marking is for Nitro-proof. The steel marking says something along the lines of Krupp'scher Lauf-Stahl (Krupp barrel steel).

Does it have Nitro in italics somewhere on it? Is there a name on the rib?

    Let's see if this helps:

      t.ca,
This is to supplement Peter's comments, which are entirely correct. The number under the 72, looks like 613( could be 413). This would mean was proofed in June 1913 ( or April 1913, if the number is 413). Directly under the 613 is another number that I read as 1317. Whatever the number is, it is the proof house's ledger number( meaning it was that number gun proofed since the first of the year. Peter opined that the ZM below that number might be the Zella Mehlis house mark. This is entirely true, as confirmed by the date and ledger number( Suhl didn't show ledger numbers and didn't date them until after 1923).

        Thanks for the help.
The number under 72 is 413 and below that is 1311.
The 1913 date fits, my grandfather would have been 19 at the time.
Your assessment of the rifle cartridge is right on.
There are no other nitro markings on the barrel, no name either, the only other number is 233.
I have attached a couple more pictures.

          t.ca,
While you might not think so, ammunition is currently available in the 9.3x72R Normaliziert(?)(standardized) format. You might try Buffalo Arms, Graf & Sons, or others that carry Sellier& Bellot ammo.

            Hello

It appears there are two different marking SS on the rifle barrel. It also seems to have two crown G. I've seen both of the double S markings before but I don't know what or whom they might be for. I can't find anyone to fit the initials SS in Zella St. Blasii or in Mehlis in 1913.

            Kind regards
