Why are many Suhl Double Rifle Drillings configured with the right and lower barrels rifled instead of rifled barrels side by side ? Is there a technical reason or just a whim?
osekerschan,
If the shot barrel is placed on the bottom, it would require a slightly larger action and would therefore make up into a heavier gun. With larger gauges this is more noticeable. There are other advantages, such as the set trigger working with both barrels( but would have to be re-set); but if the right barrel was for shot, then the set trigger would be available for an Einstecklauf, if desired. Regulation is a little more complicated, however.
