  • Krieghoff Drilling Questions before firing

Looking for info, any help would be appreciated.

I would like to take this drilling out to the range but want to make sure I am using the proper ammunition so I don't damage anything. I think I can shoot any standard/modern 16 gage shells, thinking #4 shot. Then the rifle portion I think maybe 8x57r? If so can I just use any available? I think PPU makes this caliber. Your guidance would be appreciated.

Additional questions, I see the crown N proof so think this may be a 1930's commercial gun. As there is only limited engraving I am thinking this was a standard/lower end Krieghoff. Again, any confirmation or additional info would be great.

    Thanks,
    Jim

    jim_ish,
Your drilling was proofed at the Suhl Proof House in October 1936(1036). It is chambered for 8x57 IR( .318" bullet) It may accept larger bullets, but unless you handload, that won't make much difference. It is also chambered for 16 ga 2 1/2" as shown by the 16 in a circle. These shells are shorter than the current 2 3/4" standard, but are available with some searching. Some people shoot the standard length shells, and others rail against the practice. You will have to decide for yourself. The crown S means those barrels were proofed for shot. The crown W on any barrel means that barrel was choked, but the constriction is not shown. The crown U means it underwent a View proof( a detailed inspection, including dimensions) after a definitive proof firing. It was proofed for a 13 gram Steel Jacketed Bullet, and with smokeless powder, as shown by the crown N. The note under the butt plate indicates who captured it and when. This info is very unusual to have except in those cases that a relative or friend brought it back. I hope this helps.

Ordered up some 8x57JR Sellier & Bellot ammo.

Now on the look out for some 2 1/2" shot shells.

          jim_ish,
You might check out RST,KENT, or maybe Fiocchi. You may have to find a rep. and go through them. Someone else here might have other ideas.
