I bought this rifle the other day and was just trying to narrow down the date it was built but it looks like it was reworked at some point so I need a little help. It is a 16x16 over 9.3x72R. Here are some photos.

R Marshall,
The gun was proofed in Zella-Mehlis in Sept 1911 (911) with ledger number 1048. With the bore( not groove or bullet) diameter shown in gauge( 118,35), but a case length in mm(72), also is consistent with a proof date during the transition between the system of markings under the 1891 law and the 1911 improvements to the law. I have an appointment and have to go, someone else will translate other marks.

OK, I'm back. The crown N is for nitro proof, crown U is for "view proof"( a detailed inspection after definitive proof), crown S is proof for shot, crown W means the barrel is choked ( amount of constriction not shown), crown G is proof for a single projectile( bullet), the 16 in a circle means it has a 16ga 65mm( 2 1/2-2 9/16") chamber. The 16/1(no circle) means the bore diameter of that barrel is about 16.99 mm, the 16(no circle) means that barrel has a bore diameter of about 16.81mm ; both measurements taken ahead of the chamber. What looks like 2,2 gr C BP, I believe is really 2,2gr GBP which means 2.2 gr Gewehr Blattchen Pulver( Rifle flake powder). The St. M. G. is for Stahl Mantel Geschoss ( steel jacketed bullet). I hope you find this helpful.

It would be neat to find out how long it had been in SA and if it had taken any big game.
Thanks,
Robert

Hello
For those with keen interest. I'll not swear by it but it seems that in issue 9 of Schuss und Waffe 1908 there is something on "Altmeister Scherping, Hannover". I repeat: I'll not swear by it.
If anyone should have the above issue I'd be interested in buying a copy of the article Der Stahl in der Waffenfabrikation.
EDIT: seems it's 1907 https://books.google.se/books?redir_...me&q=Scherping
Kind regards
Peter
