  • Identification of Oesterr Waffenfabr - Ges Steyr 16g SxS

Found in my grandfather's gun closet. I can't find anything about it in the blue book or online but it's a beautiful gun. Any ideas? Thanks.

A German, Austrian or British firearm not being listed in the overrated blue book is not uncommon.

Also, it would be an early 1902 as initial proof was in 1901.

It is also possible that the longarm experienced proof @ the Vienna satellite stamping station @ Steyr.

              Hello

I guess there's no cigar awaiting but this was as close as I could get. At least it's a Hammer double from ÖWG/OEWG/Steyr.

Yeah, go ahead & put a stogie in your column. You can collect it when I see you Moose Snoot.

Any hunches on whether this gun can still be fired?

Why not? It is proofed for using 2 1/2" smokeless loads. 16g 2 1/2" loads are available, even modern Brenneke slug loads. The old warning regarding choke bores "Nicht für Kugel = not for ball" meant the use of bore diameter round lead balls, not modern slugs which are designed to pass through a choke constriction. But you must not use cases that are longer than 67.5 mm, that is no modern 2 3/4" shells. Of course, the gun is useable only if it is still tight and if the barrels are not severely rust pitted.

                        Hello

Just for the hell of it, here's another one. No image of an actual shotgun this time, though.

                        racecannon,
if a good gunsmith says OK this is a keeper. There's a minor issue with the wood on the forestock. I don't know if it's fixable but this is the kind of shotgun that I wouldn't hesitate to sink some money into if it were mine.

                        Kind regards
                        Peter
