The Lignose AG (=PLC) was a larger concern, mostly an explosives and ammo maker, with factories and branches all over Germany. They also sold guns made by others for them under their own name.In 1921 they bought the Suhl gunmaking factory of Theodor Bergmann, Gaggenau, at Rimbachstrasse 51. They sold this gunmaking facility again in 1927 to Gebr. Merkel. Your shotgun was proofed 10/26, October 1926. The 1922 DRPatent # 400359 mentioned on the water table was issued to the H.Barella, Berlin, company.

The patent covers a safety that not only blocks the triggers, but the sears too.

Axel, would Gebr. Merkel have been the actual owners of Bergmann Waffenfabrik at the time when the Bergmann firm purchased August Menz in April of 1938?

No, the story is more complicated. Theodor Bergmann, 1850 – 1931, was an industrialist in Gaggenau, south – west Germany. Armament was not Bergmann's primary focus. First, from 1877, he produced metal household items, kitchen stoves and , from 1887, vending machines. In Gaggenau, 1895, he started to produce automobiles. He sold his automobile factory in 1910 to the Benz AG. Now it is, as the Daimler – Benz truck works, one of the oldest such factories in the world.
In 1896 he opened a gunmaking branch in Suhl to produce "his" Bergmann pistols. His gun designers were first Louis, later son Hugo Schmeisser. During WW1 the company made machine guns and the first submachine gun, the MP 18, all designed by the Schmeissers.
Theodor Bergmann sold his Suhl factory, not the company, to Gebrueder Merkel. Later, 1938, relatives of Theodor formed another company, named "Theodor Bergmann Erben (= heirs) GmbH", bought the Menz company and started to market the Menz pistols with the Bergmann label. So the two "Bergmann" gunmaking ventures in Suhl are not directly related.
