  • Removable combs on stocks

    Good day all.
the rifle pictured in April in the German Gun Association calendar got me curious about the removable combs. I am curious on what the opposite side looks like and what kind of bolt/ stud secures the comb on. I am guessing that the combs are custom made to fit and match the stock of the rifle. I believe that at one time my 9.3X62 model 98 had a removable comb.Unfortunately, mine did not have it. The only evidence that there might have one been one is that there is a threaded brass insert on the right side of my stock. Are my assumptions correct?
    thanks!

    werner,
I'm sure there are( or have been) different systems for this. The ones I have seen are not removed, but rather the comb raises to be more convenient for telescope use. They are usually spring loaded and activated by a button that releases the comb to move up. These are actually the comb itself and not intended to be removed, rather it would be lowered for open sight use. Somewhere in the back of my mind, I seem to recall seeing one that was removable, as you describe. I believe it was inlet to fit over the normal comb and when it was installed was both a raised comb and cheekpiece. I didn't see how it attached, so I can't say your assumptions are not correct. During the 70s, I met a Herr Wolf that owned a company that made gunstocks for different manufacturers. He spoke of having a patent for a type that raised and lowered, but I never saw one of them. Maybe one of the other members, or Axel, has experience with the type you describe.

I have seen two drillings with what appears to be a period comb raiser. They had a matching wood cheek pad about 1 to 1 1/2" high shaped to fit flush with the top of the stock wrapping over the comb. This cheek pad had a single round rod with a groove cut in it about 1" long that was inserted into a metal stud inlaid into the top of the rifles stock. This stud of corse had a hole that the cheek pad post went into and the one I handled , the cheek pad locked in place when lowered all the way down. There was some type of ball or spring locking mechanism that caught onto the groove in the rod. I happen to manufacture a line of cheek pads and raisers call Accu-riser. I send them all over the world including Germany but don't know if any are used on Drillings. You can take a look at them at www.accu-riser.com.
