Zero/Setup iron sights on Drilling

Great info, thanks guys. I can see that a longer scope is required - in the picture below I've lined it up with a scope from an old kipplauf with a rail and you can see the rear claw would not get lose to the base even if it was moved to the very end of the rail. Also - any idea what the screw just in front of the rear leaf does? I'm assuming its to gain access to the flip up mechanism, but could it be any kind of adjustment screw?

Apparently your scope mounts were set up for a really big, likely 8x, scope.
The screw in front of the rear sight just holds the rib insert with the mechanism in place. There usually is no adjustment provided, neither for the rear nor for the front sight. Original adjustment by the gunmaker was by trying different front sights and filing the rear sight notch. Any resighting is possible only by replacing the front sight for elevation. If you want to adjust windage, filing the rear sight notch wider in the direction you want the shot to go is the only option.

An an update - I've found a load that groups very well. Practice with the iron sights has helped a lot! Below a pic of my group with a kneeling shot at 60 yards with plenty of cooling time between shots. Ignore the right hand flyer - I pulled this as my foot was on soft ground. I can consistently get 3/4" groups kneeling - found it doesn't like being shot off bags. Its still about 3-4" high and right so I guess I have 2 choices - get the file out or shoot low and left!

I too have better luck, if I don't rest my combination guns directly on the bags. I find I do well by holding the gun in my hands, as if I were shooting off hand; but rest my "weak hand"( in my case-left) on the bags. It's ok to rest the butt on a bag as long as it doesn't interfere with the natural recoil of the rifle/body. The cooling, you mentioned, is critical. Good on you, for the groups.

Why not just have a new front sight made? My 'smith made two for me and I don't believe combined they were $75.00. After filing in the new front sight for elevation I took needle files and filed it to a bead configuration. I don't know if you'll be able to get enough off that rear sigh without making it look really hokey. Even if you do you're up the proverbial creek without the well known paddle if you ever want to shoot different loads. Ultimately it is your firearm to do with as you wish but it seems a shame to mess with the rear sight when the front can be changed so easily.

They are useful anywhere, I have einstecklaufs in a couple and have taken hare, fox, raccoon, bobcat, and squirrel while hunting deer. Also dove, bobwhite, rabbit, hare, pheasant, and duck with shot while small game hunting with the same guns.

You're not that far off and may be able to offset the front sight enough to compensate for the windage. It may look a little funny but I have had to do that before. Just a thought. Thanks, Diz

With my post it note calculations 3.5 inches at 60yds equates to about 1mm off height and offset to right. I think I'd rather experiment with a spare than whittle down my original.
