New Rifle

I finally purchased this rifle for a price I liked. There are no makers name or serial #. It is a WWII bring back by an unknown maker. The barrel has a 1904r on it next to the threads. I am getting the chamber cast as I measured the bore with plug gauges and it appears to be .318. It looks to be a good entry level rifle for me. I have a k98az and
it has the same barrel and 4 hold down screws for the trigger group.

Nice rifle Al! It's rare to see one that hasn't been drilled and tapped. I hope that lovely case hardening doesn't suffer that fate.

I have no intentions of adding a scope. The rear sight is loose and the set trigger does not work. I will repair as needed to be a good shooter and leave its beauty the way it is.

The rifle was most likely built in the interwar years, using leftover WW1 Gewhr 98 action parts, as the serial numbers on bolt stop housing and bolt handle at least don't match. Can you supply a clear photo os the underside of the receiver ring, the small "step" between recoil lug and barrel? Also, there ought to be proofmarks and numbers under the barrel. These would allow dating the rifle.

Sometimes doubleset triggers become worn or damaged, to the point they don't function. Most often, however, we find they have been misadjusted in a misguided attempt to lighten the unset trigger pull. The small screw between the triggers only adjusts set trigger's sear engagement, it has nothing to do with the weight of trigger pull, for the front trigger when not "set". If there is no visible damage, adjust the screw until there is enough engagement to hold the rear trigger, when pulled to it's rearmost position. You can easily see this relationship, if you remove the trigger guard assy. Once you have it, so it will "hold", you can adjust the "pull" to your satisfaction.

Axel, there are no numbers in front of the recoil lug and the only numbers on the barrel are 1904r. I see in other posts where there are many more numbers then what I have. That is why
I am doing a chamber cast.

Thanks for all the info, if I find more markings as I clean I will post more pics.

The punched match marks on the receiver ring & the barrel are interesting...

I would have thought the serial number of the receiver would have been applied to the barrel - negating the need to the punch marks.

The butt plate has 6 punch marks on the inside and the number 6 written on the stock in pencil.

Duh - I finally re-read the initial post where it said "no serial number."

Hence the punch marks ! (My drilling has two diagonal slash marks on various parts, since it too has no serial number.)

That is a good looking rifle, I love the coloring.
