Not about the bore of the barrel, about the thingy on the top flat. About 2 1/2 to 3 inches in front of the receiver there is a.....thingy....that almost looks like a rail for some type of clamp on sight or scope bases but it doesn't appear to have been used for such. On mine it is marked 1, 2 and 3 starting nearest the breech. It isn't sloped one way or the other as for elevation. I am at a loss as to what it is for. I don't have any of books on Scheutzen rifles so can't look it up in any of them...if it is addressed. I've seen it in pictures on other Scheutzen rifles, what is it for?

A common feature of many target rifles, Schuetzen- and small-bores. It's for clamping on an adjustable open rear sight, as prescribed for some matches. The numbers are there as a help to clamp the rear sight in the same position every time, according to the individual eye relief/sight picture preference of the owner. Of course, not used when a Diopter = tang sight is mounted. The dimensions of these ribs were not standardized, each maker using his own. So only the sights hand fitted by the maker could be used. -
