JP Sauer Model 32 Drilling - My first German hunting rifle

Hi Folks! New to the forum with my first German drilling... From what I have gathered it is a Model 32 manufactured approx 1935 in 16GA / 8x57JR caliber. Funny how I came to own it...as you see in pics, I was given the scope by a welder friend of mine who was a hunter.. told me it was for a drilling... So I bought a gun to match the scope! Overall, the gun is in very nice condition with nice blueing and fair case colors. The stocks were refinished and there are numerous dents and gouges in the wood. Missing sling swivels. Its a beautiful gun. I plan on restoring the wood and getting new swivels/sling. So am busy researching various aspects of the upcoming restoration; as I do for all my projects.

Gotta love a drilling!! Congrats grappa but I feel I must warn you, tis a slippery slope you've set foot on!!!

Do the rings fit the bases?

Your "new" drilling was not built "approx 1935". It was proofed by the Suhl proofhouse 732 = July 1932. The mount uppers on your Hensoldt, Wetzlar, "DURAL - DIALYTAN" scope with the one foot rear will cerainly not fit the bases on the drilling. As these claw mounts were provided in a raw state by several manufacturers, all with their own dimensions, and all these claw mounts were hand fitted by competent gunsmithes, the only scope that will fit existing claw mount bases is the one originally mounted on these bases.

grappa, very nice drilling and if it where mine I might think twice about doing much to it. It has acquired a lot of character over the years. Sharps is right you are on a slippery slope now but it will be a fun ride. Axel is also right about the base but there are ways to fix it and I am sure someone here will help out. Good luck, Diz

You can have the scope mounted on your drilling, but you will have to remove the upper mount parts and the front base's dovetail plate. The new front mount will come with a plate already fit to it. You can get a new rear base with a "foot" that can be milled to fit the rear base, and a new "slider" to enable fitting the rear "foot". The most likely problem will be a misfit of dimensions between the bases and the location of the original upper mount parts. The screws are partly in the rails and partly out of them and original location might show. The new parts might hide them, but if not, the "raw" aluminum can be colored with a black china marker. My unsolicited opinion is you should contact one of the gunsmiths shown in the Trade Directory in WAIDMANNSHEIL, or New England Custom Guns ( they can obtain the parts) to do the work. If you insist on trying to do it yourself, you can get the parts from NECG.
