  • Reboring/Relining Mauser 98 Barrel

I own a prewar commercial Mauser 98. Actually a post WWI. It has a 23" 9.3x57 light pencil taper barrel, integral full length rib, integral with the rib ramp front sight topped with a silver bead, 3 leaf express sights. Light weight stock with the short fore end, strengthening panels over the magazine well. steel butt plate.
I sent it to Jim Dubell of Delta Gun Shop, Clearwater Reboring In Washington. To rechamber and rerifle the original barrel., as the bore looked like a rusty water pipe. Jim Passed away this July, mid project. He managed to disassemble to barrel, ream the bore. His wife returned to me the barrel and action.
I contacted Turnbull restorations first (as they are members of the GGCA) they do not do this type of work.
I am currently looking for someone to complete the project. full length, breech to muzzle, Reline, rechamber, and cut rifle. in 7x57
Any one know of a gunsmith who does this work? I emailed Jon Spencer this same question, but I thought odds were better if I put this out to you guys.
    Thanks for any help!

    Mark,
I suggest you buy the current issue of RIFLE magazine from which ever news rack you use. In the back, you will find advertisements of several firms that do barrel work. You can select whichever one you think will satisfy your need ( maybe you could correspond with more than one). Good luck, let us know how it works out. It would have been easier if the bad barrel was 7mm and you wanted 9.3.

      Marko,

Here is the name and contact info for a fellow that rebored a couple of guns for a friend of mine. He did some very nice work and didn't take forever. As always use your own discretion but I don't think you will have any problems.

Pederson would be my first recommendation.

I was sorry to hear when Dubbell passed, I had a Mauser waiting to be shipped out.

I cannot help with the boring or rifling. I can help with the chambering and reassembly.

Marko wanted to have his barrel relined to 7mm, but it seems "Classic" only does reboring.

Marko, what did Jim ream the barrel to?

Problem is, he likely was going to make an insert, then cut the bore. Most, myself included, would have to make an insert pre rifled.

Classic would probably cut the rifling if the barrel was already re-lined.

              Mr Meyers,
Norman Johnson sounded like he would do the work then he seemed to drop off the planet. I'm back to square one AGAIN. Jim DuBell reamed the bore to about .40 cal and still needed another light pass to totally clean the bore. What we discussed was ream out the bore and chamber, use a barrel blank chambered for 7x57, turn down to the inside contour of the original barrel. I imagine the liner would look like a looong neck beer bottle. then silver solder or epoxy the new liner. maybe even pinned under the forend to secure it further. Mr Johnson said he would feel better with a 6.5. I have 2-7x57 rifles I handload for so I would prefer the project be a 7x57.
I can send photos of the barrel. If you wish to discuss this project and perhaps undertake it, email me at markoent@comcast.net.
              Thanks, Mark Kostal
