  • Where to buy German style scope mounts.

Where can I buy new scope mounts for my drillings and Oberndorf Mausers? I am new to this so I'm guessing they take a highly specific mount. Thank you!

    Do your guns have bases?

      Yes the standard Germanic bases.

Standard....as in claw mount? If so there's nothing standard about them, unfortunately. Wish there was.

If you want to stay with Claw Mounts-----http://www.newenglandcustomgun.com

They can build the claw rings for you, they are pricey.
They built some rings for a combination gun for me, very nice work.

I think New England also sells some mounts that can be adapted to claw I believe made by Rectangle.

I think lawdog means Recnagle. If I understand things correctly, for drillings, to have a pair of claw mount rings made you will have to choose the scope first. The rings are then made to fit that scope. Bear in mind I don't have a lot of experience scoping drillings so others will have more and better information. As bolt rifle rings are different from drilling rings I would believe you can use whatever scope you choose given what size you have the rings made, 1 inch or 30mm. Some time back I checked on having NECG make some claw mount rings for my one drilling that is equipped with bases and I believe I remember the quote being around $700.00.

NECG will need the scope and the barrels to fit a pair of rings. Mine were for a 16 Gauge/8X57JR Combination gun. You probably would not be able to fit a scope with a large objective. Mine is a Leupold 1.5X5X20MM. Makes for a light, compact package with plenty of reach for my purposes. The rings did cost right at $700.00. I wanted the advanrtage of being able to remove and replace the rings without losing zero, also wanted to maintain the original appearance of what I think is unique, versatile weapon for hunting South Texas.

It is correct that the scope should be chosen first. In fact, it is helpful to have the drilling(or other rifle) with you while choosing the scope, and check the location of the bases, relative to the scope. This is done by laying the drilling on a counter/table and place the scope in the appropriate location. You should check different rifles and determine the distance between the heel of the butt and the scope lens( carry your own small tape measure). Maybe you can avoid having to move/replace the front base saddle this way. The front ring should be at or near the front of the scope, so that when it is tipped on or off, the objective bell doesn't impact the rib. The rear base/lock would usually also be replaced, if the work is done by a German gunsmith( here or there). Don't worry if the front ring has to be mounted on the objective bell, they are made in a variety of different diameters, and will come with the base plate already fit to the hooks. Ernst Apel Wuerzburg (EAW) and maybe Recknagle (ERA) has a system that converts the old clawmount bases to "swingmount". NECG will have the parts and there is good reason to believe it would be much cheaper. Furthermore, you have much more flexibility choosing the scope, with swingmounts as compared to clawmounts. Do I have everyone confused yet?

Not at all, very clear. I should have mentioned the reason large objective scopes can be problematic with claw mount systems.
As far as scope mounting location, NECG had me mark the rib with tape at the forward most location of the front of scope.
Their instructions were very clear and the work was spot on.

Large objective scopes are only problematic if trying to fit them to old bases, no problem if the original mounting. I know there are differing opinions about which scope is proper. Lawdog likes small scopes, I like scopes with at least 7mm objective pupil diameter(6x42,8x56,4x36 is ok). They make rings to fit any of them. I shoot drillings with my head up, like a shotgun, it is a shotgun. Since I try to only shoot once, I don't get wrapped around the axle over cheekweld.

You can mount a scope another way by machining Leupold scope rings into claw mounts. I have mounted Weaver scopes on several of my drilling sand single shot rifles this way.

I have even made a weaver style base with claws to mount on the bases. This way I can mount any size scope with quick detachable scope rings shown above.
