Greetings All,
Well, I went out squirrel hunting yesterday with my old German double barrel and found I only had a single shot. Something's wrong and I figured I'd start here for advice so here goes. I have a prewar FW Kessler .12 ga boxlock, side by side, double triggers, ejectors and round cocking indicators on the sides of the action. Left barrel cocks, fires and works fine. When uncocked, the cocking indicator line is horizontal, the firing pin is visible protruding from the breech face, and when cocked, it rotates up, to 10 and 4:00. The right barrel is the problem and will not completely cock or fire. When uncocked, its cocking indicator line is horizontal, however, the firing pin is visible about 1/16" back in the FP hole and does not protrude to the point needed to fire a cartridge. Also, when cocked, the cocking indicator line rotates forward and down (instead of up as on the properly functioning barrel). When the right barrel is dry fired (using a block of wood to cushion the FP), there is a dull thud instead of the crisp snap as on the good side and the FP remains recessed in its hole. Last thing noted is, and sorry I don't know the proper terms, both barrels will cock with barrel and forearm attached, however, regarding the 2 cocking tabs that protrude from the front of the lower receiver that engage 2 slots and lumps on the back of the forearm...when fired, the left barrel tab pops fully upward in its slot. The right (malfunctioning barrel) tab also pops up when fired, but is loose and has about 1/16" of up and down play in it. I'm not about to tear into this gun's action. Its screws are still pristine and indexed and I'm not a gunsmith. I welcome any advice and if it ends up that I need a gunsmith, can anyone recommend a smith in Virginia? Thanks a lot guys!
