  • Dating an Anschutz rifle

I am trying to convince a seller that his rifle is C&R eligible. I have not seen the gun in person and the seller did not find any proof marks. This is what I have. It is a training rifle in the Mauser Model 98 pattern. Unlike most trainers, it has a military type front band with bayonet lug. It is marked "J.G. ANSCHUTZ" on the top of the barrel and "JGA" in a circle on the receiver. Also marked "Wehrsportkarabiner." The serial number is 11xxx and the caliber is 4mm Long rimfire. Any documentation that I can provide the seller would be greatly appreciated.

    Thanks,
    Bob

A known indoor paramilitary HJ = Hitler's youth training model, see Jon Speed: "Mauser Smallbores, Sporting, Target and Training Rifles", page 241. Made in the 1930s, 1935 - 39. 4 mm Zimmerstutzen rifles were not regarded as "firearms" then. As they used no powder, just the priming compound, they were not subject to proof.

If you Google "Anschütz 4mm Wehrsportkarabiner" you will find numerous rifles and descriptions. They are certainly C&R eligible and I have two of them. Ammo is getting tough to find. They were made for 10 meter indoor shooting.
