I am told it should have a horn grip cap and not a steel one like it has.

Sorry, but I was simply going on what you had written. It didn't look like steel to me, and I believe it was made by a gunsmith to lenthen the buttstock. All the other info I provided is as correct as I can determine at present. Regards, Jim

I saw a Sauer 16 gauge of the same vintage (1929) and purchased it. It had a shortened stock and weighed 6lbs 2oz so it was perfect for my young son. One day I was hunting just with his uncle and loaned him my duck-gun and took the little 16 for myself. It has 65mm, (2,1/2") chambers. A black swan flew past. It is legal quarry here in New Zealand. Rene missed it so I nailed it - 1 shot. I remember thinking then that a double 4-bore couldn't have killed it any quicker. On another hunt, some geese went past. My son was armed with it that day. It fired 3 shots with my autoloader but to no effect. Then I noticed there was a goose down and a big grin on junior's face. One shot! I gained a new respect for the little gun. He's taller than me now and I've since lengthened the stock with a closely matching piece of walnut and a leather recoil pad.
