  • Anyone have issues with Brenneke 16ga 2 1/2" slugs?

When shooting yesterday I fired my JP Sauer with the new Brenneke slugs I recieved. I wanted to see how they shot in my barrels. The first shot, left barrel was beautiful, right on point of aim. Second, right barrel, was about 4" high and 8" right. They were shot from about 30yds.

Not what I was hoping for, but that wasn't the problem! When I gripped the wrist to open the action the side panel of the stock was pushed out the full thickness of the panel (3/16" or so) and then some past the side of the reciever. Thank god it didn't break!

I was too terrified to fire another salvo and risk damaging the stock.

Has anyone else had a similar issue? Methods to resolve the issue? I purchased 6 boxes of slugs hoping to sight in and hunt this fall, hoping the ammo would group well and I could use this as my goto deer gun.

I recently fired approx. 6 rounds out of my ca. 1927 combination gun. No problems at all (but the do lead up the choke area of the barrel).

Did any of your primers get pierced ?

If your stock is 3/16" out past your action , the stock is probably broken already inside . I would take it to a gunsmith and have him take it apart and check it out. It can be fixed and made stronger than before. It may have already been cracked and you didn't know it. I have taken a few of my drillings and single shots apart for refinishing or repair and have found internal cracks I couldn't see.

No primers were pierced. My first thought ran a similar course.

What's odd is the left side did not pop?

My gunsmith will be taking the Sauer down next week to see if the stock is cracked/broken from the inside. I have already contacted the stock maker I use about repair or replacement. My pocket book sincerely hopes that a replacement is not required!

I don't know if this holds true with drillings but double rifles are normally regulated and fired right barrel first. I believe this has to do with heating and expansion of the barrel that affects the left point of impact. There are people that know a lot more about drillings than I do that may comment on that. I have seen stocks split on the inside that did not show. The good news is it is usually an easy repair that doesn't show. Good luck with it.

            Gentlemen,

Read this thread, in particular the hunt report and my reply to Mike (3rd down) where I included a quote from our friend Axel E. (Kuduae) regarding the regulating of drillings and slugs. The Brenneke slugs, developed in 1898, eventually became pretty much the standard in Germany.

Shotguns (doppelflinte) are a different story.

            Regards,

            Mark

Thanks for the link and I find it very interesting that it is the left barrel that is regulated. However, it does make sense since you use the front trigger to shoot the rifle barrel and the rear trigger shoots the left with the slug as a back up. I'm going to have to try mine with slugs just to see. Very nice boar by the way.

              Thanks, Diz

I usually use an einstecklauf in the right barrel, so shot in the left. For those that do use slugs, I understand they use shot in the right barrel and the slug in the left. This allows a quick followup shot after the rifle without having to reset the selector.
A new stock shouldn't be required, repair will be easy.
