    Rick,
The problem with that is, everybody wants to live a long time. If you live long enough, what you have in the will may be the equivalent of $50.

Peter: After that first post I looked on the web and found a booklet entitled Zusammenstellung ballistischer Angaben published by BKIW (formerly DWM) in the 1920s (tho undated) that gave ballistic information on DWM cartridges of the time. This source, which is likely the origin of the material in the old Stoeger catalogs, confirmed W=Walsrode and also mentioned the W.1920 propellant. It's an interesting item. Dan

If my descendants don't want to keep my guns after I die, the next best thing is to make sure they sell them for a fair price.
What is this all about? I thought this drilling belonged to your son? Or is your son a minor and you are keeping it for him?

It does belong to my son (he will be 46 in December, so not a minor!! ) I was just trying to explain why I wanted some ballpark figure as to what it might be worth, sort of a "philosophy".

I spoke on the phone to my son and he said he plans to keep it. He did say if it was worth several thousand dollars, he would be tempted to sell it, although I'm almost positive it is not. I was glad to hear he wanted to keep it.

He said the family story was that his grandfather brought it back from Germany when WWII ended. Since there is no written proof, not claiming it is a "veteran bringback.

I'm guessing the value is maybe in the $1000-1500 range?

Thanks Rick, he's the age of my sons one of which is a gun nut and the other not. I have nothing from my grandfathers except a couple pictures. Our family home in Darmstadt was destroyed in WWII.

Rick, nice old drilling. The other guys are so much better versed than me in the details I'm going to remain silent about them. I think it's an interesting cartridge and I'd have to be shooting it....as would several others on the board...

I look at a lot of drilings on line and a few in person as I come across them but that doesn't make me an authority by any stretch of the imagination. Given what I see and from looking at your sons my thought is it should probably start at $1500 with a high of maybe $1800. That's one man's opinion and as mentioned, he isn't an authority.

                      Rick,

Forgive me for joining in on an old topic, but I'd like to offer two things.

First, I am glad your son decided to keep the drilling. I may be more sentimental than most, but I have a few of my grandfathers guns. Short of putting my wife and kids on the street nothing could convince me to sell them.

That being said. If you want a more in depth evaluation, your son could ship the drilling to me. An inspection of the arm for condition, function, and confirmation of the caliber/cartridge, would allow a fairly accurate "appraisal".
