  • Buckshot for Short Range Gallery Load??

Has anyone tried buckshot appropriate for caliber as a gallery practice load? If so any success?
    Thanks!

In their older manuals Speer listed round ball loads for some cartridges. I tried them years and years ago simply to say I did and yes they work fine. I've always shot a lot of muzzleloaders and cast consequently I have a number of round ball molds. Buckshot would work just as well. I think #1 buck is either 30 or 31 cal. and I tried some of that in a 32 cal. flinter. Worked just fine.

I can remember going with my favorite uncle, many, many years ago, to a meeting of a local "conservation" club. One of the members talked about, and demonstrated, using "0" or "00"buckshot for "squib" loads in 8mm Mauser. His method involved depriming/priming by hand, droping small charges of "Bullseye" with a homemade scoop, and seating the bullet(buckshot) by hand into the unsized, charged case. I don't really remember him talking about a filler; but it was at about this time(early 1960s) that I started using a tuft of kapok in light cast bullet 30 cal(06,Krag,carbine)squib loads, so he must have.

I used OO buck in a 30-06 long ago for cheap practice loads. I had to roll a small flat band around the shot with the flat of a knife as I recall to get it to just fit in the case by hand. A couple grains of unique and it shot fairly well. Leading wasn't an issue as I recall. Cheap, easy and pretty accurate at shorter ranges.

        Thanks, Diz
