  • Here is an update on my quest to get my 5.6 shooting.
I had previously sent my dies back to RCBS late last year because the shoulder on my reformed cases was too far forward to allow the the bolt to close. I talked with John at RCBS special die department and he said that he had polished the dies .006-.007 smaller than the spec.
I sent the dies back late last week in order to have them polished down again. My reloading guy believes that it needs an additional .006 taken off.
Turn around time at RCBS is approximately a week.
Since the chamber is not to spec I am assuming that this might be why my rifle is in such good shape.... I'm beginning to believe that it possibly has never been fired.
    i will post updates!
    My 3 year quest continues.

      • wernerhelm,
Whenever you get tired of fooling around with sending the dies your dies back and forth, your local gunsmith, machine shop, or home shop machinist can take care of the problem. I quite often shorten dies, for various reasons. A sharp carbide cutting tool will cut the die. Make the facing cut from the center, out. It will "squall" at first, but after the hard surface is penetrated, it will stop. The die will "run true" if you turn it into a 7/8-14 threading die and chuck the threading die (lined up with tailstock center)in the 3 jaw chuck. Just be sure to break and polish the sharp edge left by the cut. Shorten it more than necessary and then just adjust the die so the bolt will close on a case.

        • wernerhelm, Mike is right, you would be better taking a good measure off and then only run the case in until the bolt will close. The cases I sent you were full sized with a shell holder cut down to the minimum and the shoulder pushed back as far as I could and they didn't close. I know this has been a long haul for you but I don't think you'll regret it. Keep us informed and good luck, Diz

          • I appreciate the information on how to address my problem and the words of encouragement. I heard back today from RCBS and the dies will be in the mail back to me by the end of the week. Fortunately I'm only our the cost of shipping and of course my time on this second adjustment.
I'll post updates once we try the die.

            • The dies finally worked !
Once we get some cartridges loads and a trip to the range I will post results.

              • wernerhelm, that's good news! Check earlier in this thread for some loads I used but proceed with caution. PM me if you want to go over it further. Thanks, Diz
