  • Steyr 1900 commercial bolt problem

I just received two Steyr's one model 1900 and one 1903. The bolt head was loose and I can't seem to find out how to put it together. Any help would be appreciated. Looked on the net could only find info for 95's.

What model of Steyrs do you have? The model designation is on top of the receiver ring. On the left Receiver rail there is the manufacturing date. I ask this because there were the model 95 Mannlicher with the straight line, protuding, clip fed magazine, and a rare model 1900 and the common Mannlicher –Schoenauer, both with the rotary, flush magazine. Whatcondition do you describe by "the bolthead is loose"? On both the m95 Mannlicher and the m1900 Mannlicher-Schoenauer turnbolt actions the bolt head is free to slip out to the front of the uncocked bolt, as it is are on their "Grandfather", the German M88 Commission rifle. To assemble these bolts correctly: slip the bolt head into the uncocked bolt all the way, then cock the bolt by pulling back on the cocking piece/ safety/ firing pin nut assembly and turning it clockwise a quarter turn. With the bolt cocked, as on regular extraction, the bolt head will be locked to the bolt body. With the bolt in the locked, fired position the bolt head is locked in between barrel breech and bolt body. As soon as the bolt handle is raised, cocking the rifle, the bolt head is again locked to the bolt body. It should be "loose" only if the bolt is out of the rifle and the bolt is uncocked by hand. On the Mannlicher-Schoenauers from the 1903 on the bolt assembly was redesigned : You have to disassemble firing pin nut, safety and cocking piece first, then to turn the bolt head 180 degrees to free it from the bolt body.
Here are two photos of Mannlichers, top a M95, bottom a M1900 Mannlicher-Schoenauer:

If it Slips into the bolt, the bolt is uncocked. you have to cock the bolt! this connects the bolt head to bolt.

one more quick question. How does the takedown feature work? I see the lever on the front of the triggerguard but it doesn't seem to do anything.

The procedure for taking down a Mannlicher-Schoenauer factory take down: 1.) remove bolt 2.) remove Magazine innards by slightly pushing in the spring detent through the front hole of the mag floorplate, turning the floorplate 90 degrees and pulling the assembly out. 3.) remove crosspin from foreend 4.) now turn the takedown lever in front of the triggerguard 5.) lift barreled action out of stock
If your rifle was highly modified or fitted with another takedown system by H&H, you are on your own.
