      cwbuff,
Which ever dies you wind up using, or 8x72R cases, you still won't have to use a bullet in fireforming. The extra sizing and expanding may work the cases too much.I have found using a filler in fireforming is easier on the cases and usually results in a more even neck, than if an expander is used.

What kind of loads are appropriate for fire forming and shooting? Are these barrels black powder?

I see only BP proof marks on that rifle barrel, and the 9.3x72 were originally BP cartridges. Considering the age of the gun, I would be loading with BP, but light smokeless loads could be used. Too, I would be shooting cast lead bullets, maybe paper patched lead bullets, or Hawk bullets with their soft copper jackets at the hardest.

Have you checked the bore and groove diameter?

Thanks - that is what I thought. I may consider Berry's copper plated bullets. I have a good stock of Swiss BP and Pyrodex.

The perchlorates in Pyrodex are far more corrosive than real BP. If you're interested in trying smokeless, use AA5744.

You really need to check the throat diameter, bore and groove diameter, and maximum inside diameter of a case that will chamber. Cast bullets are at their best when they fit the throat and are larger than groove diameter by not more than .002-.003". Undersize cast will lead the bore because of blow by. Soft paper patched bullets over BP will obturate to fill the groove diameter despite being undersize.

Thanks - I was not aware that Pyrodex was more corrosive than BP. I will slug the bore to get the sizing correct. I have AA5744 stocked - I cast bullets for 30-40 Krag and 30-06 loads with 5744.
