  • CFT16ga 7.7x57 O/U

My nicest old German sporting gun is a 16ga over 8x57JR. I ran across this one in a gunshop, and it reputedly came from an estate. Beside it was a Paul Jaeger 12ga/243 with scope. While it was much newer and more common US chamberings, it didn't hold a candle to this one, and was priced higher.

I THINK it to have been made by Christian Friedrich Tribel. It is nitro proofed 16/1 and choked for the upper barrel and 7.7x57 nitro proofed for the lower. The bores are perfect. Claw mounts added later obscure some writing along the rib, but likely the dealer name and city. There is no date code, so likely a 1912-1922 work of art in wonderful condition.

The trigger guard is horn as are the grip cap, butt plate, and forend inlay.

The front trigger is of the set variety for the rifle barrel

The cartridge trap is in the toe of the stock

Is that a BP proof on the R side of the shotgun barrel?

That's either an EK or EH for a mechanic.

        Cheers,

          excess650,
I agree with your decision to pick this very fine gun over the 12ga/243,even with no scope on the 16. To me 12 ga.guns are too clumsy and a cartridge for a single shot rifle "belongs to have" a rim, to quote my late brother-in-law.Also, the type mount bases, on the rifle, should make fitting rings easier.
