I just had the rifle out and barrel measures 23 in. exactly from muzzle to the front of the receiver ring. The only legend on the matted rib is "JP Sauer & Sohn, Suhl".

Edit: I was looking at your pictures again, mine does not have set triggers. I'll need to pull it down and see if it ever did. From the shape of the trigger it doesn't appear it ever did.

excess650, obviously your barrel was shortened some time, as it lacks the integral front sight base that was standard with these half-octagonal, ribbed rifle barrels.

I think otherwise. The contour along the rib ends prior to the front sight, front sight is dovetailed correctly from the from the front, and there is a marking on the end of the barrel between the bore and front sight. It doesn't appear to have been modified.

I'm not intending to be argumentative, and admire your knowledge, BUT, observe the linked photos:

barrel rib marking and rear sight markings: Note that the standing leaf is marked "80" on TOP of the leaf, barrel marked " Mod.Mauser.J.P.Sauer & Son."

top front of rib contour: note how the rib flares out just behind the front sight

muzzle marking below front sight appears to be "S&S"

Obviously there was variation in these rifles as seen in photos of just a few. Mine has high grade wood, but no cheek piece or grip cap. Others have straight grained wood, grip cap, longer barrel, small ring vs large ring action, single triggers vs DST, so is why I'm willing to share my photos and view others.

After seeing the close up photos of the muzzle area, I have to concede: Your barrel is of original length, with the original, albeit a bit unusual, front sight set up. As Jack O'Connor once wrote: " If you think you know everything about Mausers, prepare for some surprises."
