  • newbie with a mauser

hello Thanks for the invite , my Mauser is a Waffenfabrik mauser- oberndorf A/N , with a U and a B with crowns over them. 8843? Serial # in 9.3x 57 . It's i think around 1920 model 98 b sporter. I have yet to find another like it in 9 mm with serial so low . Maybe someone else has one similar ?mauser.jpgmauser2.jpgmauser3.jpg

According to Jon Speed's books, the serial number dates it to 1924. Yes, it is a type B commercial sporting rifle. Be carefull: The common Mauser commercial sporter cartridge then was the 9x57, .357" bullet. The 9.3x57, .363" bullet, was chambered in very few Mauser commercial rifles on special order. The 9.3x57 cartridge was a Scandinavian (Sweden, Norway) peculiar, popular only there. Take the rifle apart and post a photo of all the markings under the barrel. crown/B = proof load fired and crown/U = inspected afterwards are the official proofmarks as stamped by the Oberndorf proofhouse til 1924.

the numbers are on the side of the chamber a sideways M 8,85.9,07.360. on the other side of the chamber is the serial # plus 9,OH under the chamber 108,49 and the U and B with crowns . all serial numbers match throughout the rifle . thanks and what do you think its worth ?

The numbers are to be read this way: bore/ land diameter 8.85 mm = .348", groove diameter 9.07 mm = .357", rifling twist rate one turn in 360 mm = 14.2". 108.49 is the old fashioned gauge number for a 9 mm bore. So your rifle is in 9x57, not 9.3x57, as I suspected. 9x57 cases can be made both from 8x57 IS/Mauser and 9.3x57 brass. For loads, see this thread:

well thats damn good to know . the rifle has been in the family for a long time , all i have ever seen with it was 9.3 x57 , i actually have a few boxes . dont fire it much which could be a good thing, i will look for 9x57 rounds , see if it is more accurate . thanks for the info . anyone have any 9x57 ? i have 5 new boxes of norma 9.3x57 ? lol Thanks Alex
