  • German hunting guns book. Anyone here seen it?

One of my customers sent me a link to this book from Safari Press. Looks interesting. Has anyone here looked at it yet?

Hi chapmen. My customer says his copy is on the way. He will read it a couple days then send it on to me. I'll review it for the group when I get it.

Hans passed in 2004/2005 before John Mann. So who is toting the ball on this & was the integrity of the original info preserved?

            Cheers,

Is is counterfeit or has someone pirated Han's data?

For those that don't know, Hans Pfingsten & John Mann performed the heavy lifting on Daly's sourcing of Lindner by doing the research & cracking the code on H.A. Lindner's efforts. See DGJ 2004/2005. I can get the specifics if anyone has interest.

                Cheers,

The GGCA should have it soon and there will be a review in our next WMH. It was finished with the help of Hans' widow. Our editor, Dr. Hummel, helped with the proofing. So save your money and watch for it to show up in our beleaguered bookstore.

                      DGJ - Double Gun Journal

Knowing that Hans passed some 10(ten) years ago, me thinks it is a bit deceiving that he published a text in 2014 without some term or terms like posthumously, etc. Or just state the truth, completed by widow, edited by Hummel in the advertising. Wonder if his wife is a GGCA member?

                      Cheers,

                          Gentlemen,

My book arrived today. I have only had time to flip through the pages, gearing up for my IA deer hunt and helping my bride with Christmas stuff, but it looks to be a nice addition to the library of anyone interested in German break-open sporting weapons. It starts with a chapter on hunting and then goes into a short list of Suhl and other gunmakers, starting with Wilhelm Brenneke. The Brenneke arm shown on page 28 is actually an 8X72R double rifle, not a drilling, but such certainly doesn't take anything away from the book for me. I suspect Raimey "ellenbr" for one will appreciate "The Mystery of H. A. Lindner - Ghost or Gunmaker". After the gunmaker section the book then goes on to address the technical aspects of the break-open sporting arm in Part 3 "The Gun Itself". Here it covers barrels, the many barrel configurations of combination guns, action variations, proof marks, makers marks, etc.. I expect it to make for many hours of good reading over the holidays and reference for years to come.

I never met Hans and only knew of him through my father and the letters I found from Hans after I lost my father in May of 2005. I'll admit it is with the latter that prompted me to order the book post-haste when I heard of its availability.

Best wishes for the Holidays and the New Year to come,

                          Mark

I read the book yesterday and thoroughly enjoyed it. The arrangement is nice and logical. Great history on mfg methods, developments and innovations. Very interesting section on "damascus" and other barrel production. To add to what Buchsemann said, he had a lot of info on configurations of things like safeties, locks, barrel arrangements, action designs, cocking indicators, and even fences. Some pretty good markings info too. I would have liked a few more makers to be covered, but there was some good info on those he put in. The author was obviously very interested in Lindner and devoted a lot of copy to that, which you may not find elsewhere. Good stuff on German hunting tradition and some of the famous hunting aristocrats & afficionados. The Book is well worth the price and a fine addition to any German/Austrian enthusiasts library. I learned a great deal from it and look forward to reading it again. There was even mention of our own Hr Apel and GGCA. I'm sure there will be some critics, but I'm not one of them .
