  • The vintage photo thread: “what’s the gun?”, oddities and nice hunting scenes

    Gentlemen,

hopefully, there’s an interest in vintage (period original) photos showing (German) hunters equipped with interesting, odd or unknown guns - or simply nice scenes of hunting groups. Well, beside guns made by J. P. Sauer & Sohn, Suhl I’m also collecting photos taken before WWII. Some are just showing nice scenes – others are showing guns being unknown to me. I just like to start a thread showing such photos in hope of seing photos of other members – and I’m starting with a real brain teaser:

what the heck is the gun in the photo? I haven’t seen something like this before. It's a drilling - but that's all what's clear to me.

    Best regards

    Martin

This should be a very interesting thread. As I've accumulated the years I have gained an appreciation for old photos. I don't have any and I really look forward to seeing what "pops up"!! That's a neat picture of the hunter, his drilling, dog and bino's.

Other than the drilling having what appears to be a Jones underlever and three triggers I don't have a clue.

      Sauerfan,
From time to time, Axel has shared old family photos with us, to illustrate a point he was making. Maybe you can go over old threads and pick some photos out and move them. Maybe you should ask him first.

              Hi Michael,

              Yep! And don’t forget the “Jagdscheine”…. ;-)

Anyway: isn’t there anybody who could bring light to the odd drilling in my photo? I’m really lost with that design.

Here’s another photo from my collection I presented already on another forum. Axel helped in determining what the gun is: it’s an Immanuel Meffert, Suhl "Hubertus" safety gun, a later type with toplever opening.

An odd detail of the photo: the large name “K. KERTSCHER” (or K. KERISCHER”) carved in the stock – the nightmare of any collector. Obviously, the owner of the gun wasn’t an abassodor of understatement….

              Best regards

                Martin,
I guess I don't understand the question, both photos are of the same gun and you said Axel identified it.

                  Mike,

I mean the gun in the first photo (first post). That still is unidentified, contrary to the gun of post #7.

                  Regards

                    Martin,
I understand now. If Axel doesn't know, maybe John Laborde will.

Seen such a thing before, but where and when??? Maybe Flintenkalle knows? Will meet him, Peo, Peter R.L., BerndK. tomorrow to sunday at the "Waffenbörse" gunshow in Kassel, maybe other members too.

Found it! In "Der Waffenschmied" #40, summer 2009, page 17, Dietrich published photos of such a Drilling, allegedly made by Dreyse, but set up as a shotgun Drilling, 3 shot barrels.
