  • 1-piece base to fit onto European Claw Mount systems?

I could have sworn I saw a new, 1-piece scope mount base that could be fitted to the European Claw mount system (provided it was "in line," I think), so that one could then buy American-style rings, mount them on the base, and mount the scope in American style rings, at considerably less expense than getting claw mount rings done.
    Has anyone else seen these?

    MattieA65,
I have seen these "shop made" by some American gunsmiths, this answers several problems relating to scope length and location of the turret. They could hardly be manufactured for commercial sale, due to differing size and spacing of the "claws" and differing spacing of the bases( these were all set to fit the particular scope to be mounted and the maker of the mounts, none of which would be known now). Ernst Apel Wuerzburg (EAW) has a very interesting swing mount adaptation to mount a scope on old clawmount bases. It has the front(swinging)ring in a plate which is fit into the original dovetail base. The rear(locking) ring fits onto a base that fits the rear clawmount base, by one of two or three methods( depending upon whether or not it is desired to be able to return the gun to it's original condition). You might be able to buy these through your local Waffen Jagdt ( the old Waffen Franconia) store. If you don't think you could fit them yourself, I'm sure they would be cheaper than claw mounts, to have someone else do it. Since they swing, rather than tip off, you have more flexibility in choosing a scope. I hope my discription is not too confusing.

You may find a reference to what you are seeing on Greg Sefton's page; see above links. I purchased my Sauer 16x16x7x57 from him. He is knowledgable about the various mount adaptations for Drillings and may perhaps be able to assist you.

I made a set for my drilling from a set of Weaver Grand Slam rings, just about like Greg Seftons description, wish I would have read that before I started. They work great but it was a major project as I did all the work with a hacksaw and files. Having a set of low mounted optics on this rifle sure changed the handling of the drilling compared to the 6x48 Nickel scope that was on it.

Thanks much! Looks like that individual made a 1-piece base for Weaver-type rings. That might be what I was thinking of.

            That's a good-looking setup. Is that a Simson Drilling?

Try this URL, it is to a PDF catalog from Germany that may have what you are looking for, see page 31. It is mostly in German but does have some english.

                Frank,
This is a new company to me, and very interesting.Except for some "strained" translation, this can be very helpful to anyone making their own rings,For people unfamiliar with how Clawmounts work, the drawings will be very helpful. Have you bought any parts from them? if so how was the experience?

                  Hi Mike,
No I can't say I've dealt with them. I've been struggling with two sets of claw mounts for quite a while so I've been doing a lot of looking. My funds for the projects are very limited so I need something where the basic item is formed but the fitting is left to me. If they were in the US I'd be apt to contact them but my German is virtually non-existent so I'm sure I could not order what I really needed correctly. I would love it if someone with greater knowledge than I could make their products work and explain the ins and outs.

                    Frank,
I suggest you contact New England Custom Guns( see trade directory in WAIDMANNSHEIL), they have connection with Recknagel(ERA), and with Ernst Apel Wuerzburg(EAW). The products of these firms are more likely to work with your gun than ZP's. These firms also have Web sites with cataloges. EAW has a very interesting conversion from claw mounts to swing mount, that is much more forgiving when choosing a scope. Good luck.

I once tried to save money on having claw bases made: very stupid. Should have gone to NECG or other reputable company and saved time, money and frustration. Love how Oskar made his own bases, very cool.

You probably are referring to a one piece base I made for my Sodia drilling I purchased from Greg. I milled a weaver style rail with claw mounts to fit my Sodia bases. This allows me to use 1" scope bases and any style scope. I use the Leupold quick release scope rings so I can quickly take the scope off and on. This was my second claw mount project on a used vertical mill I bought for $500. It has already paid for itself.
