  • Help dating a Thieme Schlegelmilch Drilling

Hello - I am new to the board and was hoping for some help or guidance. I just received a Thieme Schlegelmilch Drilling serial number 35530 as a wedding gift and have come up short trying to fin some I for action about it. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

    Thank you.

Without an image of the touchmarks, it is going to be a tough assignment.

    Cheers,

Hey Vin...browse through some of the other threads and take note of some of the pictures of the proof marks and such. That will show you what Raimey is talking about being able to see. Those marks tell "the rest of the story".....most of the time.

Vin2, since no one else has replied, I will give it a stab. It was proofed in Suhl and they didn't start dating them until the 1920's, so it was earlier than that. Under the 1893 law, the bore diameter of the bore was marked in gauge measurement, which was changed to mm measurement with the 1912 implementation of 1911 improvements to the law.At the same time the case length was added to the marks. Since the bore dia is marked in mm, but w/o case length, I would opine that the rifle was proofed in 1912, when the new system was still being implemented. Other, more qualified members may correct my assessment, if it is incorrect. BTW, the gun is chambered for 65mm(2 1/2-2 9/16") shells, instead of todays standard 2 3/4". Also the left barrel shows a "Crown W" proof, which means it is choked(usually pretty tightly), while I didn't see this mark on the right barrel, which indicates it is not choked..
