  • Imman Meffert Drilling

    Hi!
I am purchasing an Imman Meffert drilling, possibly model # 6 by the looks of the engraving. Condition appears to be very good-excellent except the bone trigger guard is broken at the front of the trigger guard. The drilling is 16 X 16 X 8 X 57JR made in Dec 1935. It has claw mount bases but no scope or rings. The rifle sight raises when the rifle barrel is cocked.
I offered $1900.00 as it was listed at $2295.00 and the owner accepted my offer. Possibly I should have offered less. I now will own 3 drilling in 16 ga. X 8 X 57 JR. My wife will never understand???
My question is how difficult is it to repair a broken trigger guard? Also this is a standard weight drilling, not a dural weight- is it possible to fire the new Brenneke 2.5 inch 16 slugs in this drilling? The bores appear excellent in the light inside the store.
    Thanks!
    Jim

    Jim,
The new 2.5" Brenneke slugs are made especially for guns like yours. If the trigger guard really is bone, it wouldn't be too hard to repair, but it is likely buffalo horn instead. Buffalo horn has an oil like substance that makes it "iffy" to glue it back together. Successful repairs usually include drilling and setting pins to reinforce the joint. Blank buffalo horn triggerguards are avaliable, so it can be replaced if repair doesn't hold. If you check close enough, one of the three might accept 8X57IRS ammo. Maybe your wife would understand two different calibers, instead of one. Enjoy it.

Explain to her that these are combination upland and big game guns and no sane man would hunt deer and pheasants with his grouse and bear gun.
