War bring back- the story behind?

I think its not an question- the most of the existing prewar german guns came after WW2 to USA, corect me if i am wrong.
How can i imagine the practical side? Was it allowed for every soldier to take guns from germany to USA? Where there any regulations?
Also it would be great if you could tell interesting storys about bring backs or war bootys!
