  • Help Identifing gun and Caliber

    Just picked up a 16x16x??
I have includes some pics of the proof marks and have a few thoughts but need a little assistance to confirm.

It looks like the gun was build in December of 1924
I think it is an 8X57R and was thinking that since it was build in 1924 that it is probably an 8X57JR with a .318 bullet rather than .323 dia.

Any thoughts on who made the gun, country of origin, etc. as there are not any manufactures name on the gun that I can decipher.

Shot gun is 16x16 with 2 1/2" chambers and Full and Full+ chokes.

    See links to pics below....
    Thanks in Advance..
    Don

    don't,
I agree the gun was proofed in Dec 1924, it was proofed in Zella-Mehlis under ledger number 598. Due to the competition between Suhl and Zella-Mehlis, since it was proofed in Zella-Mehlis, it was likely also made there or in the local area. While it would take "slugging" the barrel and making a chambercast to verify it; I agree it is likely chambered for 8x57IR. In addition to the restrictions on making "S" dia.barrels in 1924, the bore diameter(not groove or bullet)is shown as 7.7mm.This is often seen on 8x57IR, but not often on 8x57IRS. Also the duty bullet is shown as a 14.6 gram steel jacketed bullet. Had it been 8X57IRS, the duty bullet would likely have been shown as 12.7-13 grams. While they are often called guild guns, these unmarked guns were made for "the trade" and are often (but not always) marked later with a dealers name. Sometimes the actual maker marked them with a small logo, often on the action face. I hope you find this helpful.
