I recently purchased a 98 Mauser Sporter that has a cut down military stock. The stock has the same cartouches as those found on one of my 71-84 stocks. Although I have "several" Mausers I am not all that familiar with all the little nuances. Are these markings of any significance (historically or otherwise), to me they are, on a 98, rather curious. Any insight / comment would & will be appreciated. --- John

I believe the markings / cartouches (?) that you are interested in are those of different acceptance offices located in the different factories that produced or assembled parts into completed K98k Mauser rifles. There are also stamped markings indicating accepted by the German Navy and Luftwaffe also. Usually the different acceptance offices will have an eagle over a particular number, say, 135 which was Mauser. An example of a Mauser 71/84 Mauser would not have the same acceptance markings as does a III Reich rifle. Maybe some photos would be of help to us all. Regards, JIM
